Aberystwyth University - Best Years of My Life

It was on this Freshers weekend, back in September 2000, that I arrived in Aberystwyth University as a green, naïve and shy young, just turned 18 year old. Looking back over the past decade, there is no doubt that I owe Aberystwyth and its University a great debt of gratitude for helping me to become the not so green, naïve and shy man that I am today.

Pantycelyn, Freshers Week - September 2000
Over the years, some memories dim with age, but some continue to shine brightly as seminal moments in your life.

I can very clearly remember one of those as I arrived at Pantycelyn Halls of Residence on the Friday of Freshers weekend. I was very much walking into the unknown. I'd been a competent, pleasant and agreeable pupil in Whitland primary and secondary schools but going to Aberystwyth, with no-one from my year joining me, meant that I had to socialise and make new friends like never before.

Pantycelyn was definitely the best place to do so. As a Welsh language hall of residence, it had an in-built community which you wouldn't find in a Penrbyn, Cwrt Mawr or Rosser. I arrived with only 3 others on that Friday - Griff, Huw and Carl (I ended up becoming best mates with Huw over the years). But it was on the Saturday that everyone else arrived in force - that's over 250 arriving in one day when the 4 of us had decided to arrive a day earlier! I can remember a group of us met up in Room 199 which was being shared by Griff and Dai and after a number of 'bonding' drinks of vodka and orange juice, we all made our way down into town for our first proper night out in University. As Pantycelyn students, one of the central stops is of course 'Yr Hen Llew Du (the Black Lion) on Bridge St and I recall that we all suddenly left en masse for the next pub whilst Huw was still in the toilets - I don't think we saw him again that night!

The Pantycelyn Freshers Week was always an entertaining one and I half heartedly threw myself into it. I knew I needed to extend myself to meet new friends but I limited myself to some of their activities and nights out and not all of them - it was my way of keeping in control of myself.

Women lose most from digital exclusion

Women and people on low incomes or with few educational qualifications benefit most from access to IT, according to new research.

The new report, from BCS The Chartered Institute for IT, has also revealed that those who have recently gained access to the internet report the biggest uplift in their ‘life satisfaction’, with social networking and instant messaging providing additional social contact with family and friends.

Elizabeth Sparrow, president of BCS The Chartered Institute for IT, said: ‘Conventional wisdom often assumes that IT has a negative impact on life satisfaction, but the research has found the opposite to be true. IT has a direct positive impact on life satisfaction, even when controlling for income and other factors known to be important in determining well-being.’

Meanwhile Paul Flatters, Trajectory Partnership, which carried out the research on behalf of the Institute, said: ‘The findings from this research suggest women are the key beneficiaries of access to IT in the UK and in developing countries. Focusing on enabling them to overcome the social, educational, and personal ‘fear’ of IT may be a step towards accelerating solutions to the digital exclusion problem. ‘

The report ranks Britain 11th in an international league table of 39 nations in delivering the benefits of IT to its citizens. While this outperforms the US and is comparable to other European countries like France, there is still room for improvement, said BCS. Zambia came top of the table.

Initiative pushes for more women in appointed positions

A reception was held in Columbia Tuesday to honor South Carolina women running for office. Special guest was Bostonian Dr. Kerry Healey, former Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts and a senior advisor to Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign. Healey is an advocate for increasing women’s participation in government at all levels. In her tenure as Lieutenant Governor she joined Governor Romney in supporting a Gubernatorial Appointments Project (GAP) initiative in Massachusetts to increase the number of women in all appointed positions including those on boards and commissions.

Healey says she came here because the Palmetto State comes in dead last for the number of women in government leadership.

The Southeastern Institute for Women in Politics has a similar GAP program and plans to supply the new governor with the resumes of hundreds of women qualified to serve in cabinet and senior staff positions as well as the more than 800 open seats on state boards and commissions.

Democratic candidate Vincent Sheheen has signed a pledge to put more women in leadership positions in government, but Republican Nikki Haley, the leading candidate, has refused to sign any that pledge or any pledge. Healey says she understands.

It’s not uncommon that politicians say “no” to all pledges because they’re being buffeted by so many organizations that want them to do pledges that sometimes it becomes distracting to their campaign and talking with voters.

But Dr. Healey adds that she and others are in on-going discussions with Haley about their women-in-government mission. She says anyone interest in government leadership should check out this website.

Healey is a lawyer and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Since leaving office, she has worked on a State Department program to train lawyers in Afghanistan.

ANALYSING THE CURRENT SCENARIO OF WOMEN STATUS

On the run-up to the UN Millennium Development Goal Summit in New York, the Africa Progress Panel has published a resource guide highlighting the critical necessity of achieving the full participation and empowerment of women and girls in all aspects of political, economic and social life in order to achieve the goals.
The guide, “Women and the MDGs in Africa”, is a new resource for policy-makers, presenting key statistics and insights alongside the most important reports and best practice examples. Bringing important information into one place, the guide aims to mobilise action and contribute to better informed decision-making.
Speaking shortly ahead of the Summit, Kofi Annan, the Chair of the Africa Progress Panel, said:
“The Millennium Development Goals have already improved the lives of hundreds of millions of people, but we are still far from achieving what we set out to do in 2000. Much more can be done to mobilise private and public sector resources for public goods and services, and to put investment in jobs and people at the heart of growth and development strategies. Several important donors have already scaled back on their commitments or relaxed their development efforts. The Goals do not need fair-weather friends, but serious investors in for the long haul.
“Revitalizing the political will to achieve the Goals and mobilizing greater resources to deliver tangible results is the linchpin to success. The primary responsibility rests with political leaders, and their challenge is to re-articulate a compelling case for global solidarity and equitable growth. The message must be that achieving the Goals is not optional, but an essential investment in a fairer, safer and more prosperous world.”
The guide shows that:
MDG 1: End Poverty and Hunger
“Poverty alleviation strategies that fail to target girls and women have little to no chance of success in Africa.”
* Eight out of ten women workers are in vulnerable employment in sub-Saharan Africa.
“The eradication of gender discrimination is one of the key ways to increase the supply of food in Africa.”
* African women produce more 20% more than men. However women own 1% of the land and receive only 1% of all agricultural credit
MDG 2: Universal Education
“Providing girls with access to education at both primary and secondary levels support progress on all the Goals.”
Educating a girl means that:
* She will be three times less likely to get HIV/AIDS
* She will earn up to 25% more in income, out of which she will invest up to 90% in her family
* She will have a smaller, healthier family with children who are 40% more likely to live past the age of five
MDG 3: Gender Equality
“Empowering women has a multiplying effect on all development aspects and should be a priority at all levels and sectors.”
* Educated women are less likely to die in pregnancy or childbirth and more likely to send their children to school (UNICEF)
MDG 4: Child Health
“Most of under-five child deaths are preventable if women had better knowledge of when to seek for help combined with a better access to basic healthcare.”
* Africa’s under-five child deaths account for 51% of the total number of child deaths in the world
MDG 5: Maternal Health
“Maternal health is a rights and a public health issue. But it is more than that. Women are important economic drivers and their health is critical to long-term sustainable economic development in Africa.”
* Almost 75% of women in Africa who die in childbirth would be alive if they had access to the interventions for preventing pregnancy and birth complications
MDG 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria
“Globally, the leading cause of death among women between the ages of 15 to 44 years is HIV/AIDS.”
* Directly and indirectly, HIV, tuberculosis and malaria severely affect the health of women and children: Together, HIV, TB and malaria directly cause 1.1 million deaths a year among women aged 15 to 59 and 1.2 million deaths among children aged 0 to 4
MDG 7: Environmental Sustainability
“Climate change has numerous impacts on women such as increased household work burden and time spent on gathering water, food and fuel, exposure to contaminated water sources, loss of traditional land tenure and forced migration.”
* In West Africa, the proportion of urban population living in slums has decreased from 80% in 2001 to 64% in 2005
MDGs 8: Global Partnerships
“It would be both deeply counterproductive and a breach of faith if countries relax their commitment to the Goals”
* As a result of debt relief, between 2001 and 2008 and (post-decision HIPCs) poverty-reducing expenditure has increased from 6.5 billion to 26.7 billion

hy Do Games Still Stereotype Women?

If someone in a gaming community says, “Hey, let’s have a conversation about the portrayal of women in games,” the response is never, ever apathetic. There is rage. There is eye-rolling. There are myriad “Get over it, ladies” and accusations of misogyny.

These varied, often colorful responses indicate that the issue of women in games is as hot as it was back in 1985, when female Nintendo enthusiasts wondered aloud why Mario had to save the Princess, or why Link had to save Zelda. Couldn’t things be the other way around?
Flash forward to whichever year it is now, and we can see that female characters do indeed maintain a presence in video games. Problem is, it’s rarely flattering–or even remotely realistic.
The debate became especially volatile at the end of August, when Metroid: Other M hit the Wii and, fans accuse, turned the rock-steady Samus Aran into a wibbling pile of female-scented goo who must grovel to her male superior, Adam Malkovitch, before she can use her missiles, don her Varia suit, or have a pee. Given that female gamers have few totems to admire, the domestication of Samus delivered a pretty big hurt.

More girls than ever play games. So why are female characters rarely portrayed an an admirable, favorable manner?
First, we have to look at what girls would like from a female heroine. Herein lies a problem, because no two girls will ever agree on what counts as an admirable characteristic. For instance, I’ve long loved Celes from Final Fantasy VI. She’s a General in the corrupt Imperial Army, but she sees the light and turns traitor–and sticks to her guns after enduring torture. She’s a little distant, but she’s warm towards her friends. She can wield the heaviest armor and weapons available in the game, thus snuffing out the “frail female mage” stereotype that still dominates both Western- and- Japanese-made games.

But she also falls in love–very subtly–with Locke, one of Final Fantasy VI‘s main male leads. And according to one fan I discussed the game with, that level of affection instantly turns Celes into another weak-willed female game character who pines for the day when her Prince will come.

I disagreed, but I understood my friend’s point of view. Why do in-game chicks have to shack up with whatever guy’s in charge? Why can’t the heroine just opt to put dating on the backburner, at least until she’s done something to quash the reign of Vaarg the Baby Devourer? For that matter, why can’t game characters–male or female–just be asexual once in a while?
The first half of the answer is cliche. You’ve heard it a million times before, so pardon me while I cough it up one more time: Sex sells.

Some developers meet us halfway. For instance, Mia Fey of the Phoenix Wright series is a razor-sharp lawyer who never backs down. She also has dirty pillows that are the size of thunderheads. Are the giant breasts really necessary? She’d still be a good-looking woman if Capcom performed a reduction.

And there’s no sin in game characters who look good. I just ask for a little realism. If you pardon my presumptuousness, I think that’s at least one characteristic all female gamers would like to see in heroines. Fighting in high-heeled boots? It’s not going to happen.
No, don’t argue.

Don’t.
Something else that’s sexy are female game characters who simply remain true to themselves. Chun-Li from the Street Fighter series, for instance, bucked Chinese tradition to remain a single career girl. That doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with choosing to raise a family. She just knew what she wanted, and she went for it.

Granted, I just said that sex sells. It does. But developers who reference actual female creatures for their own games don’t exactly crash and burn because they denied their male audience “moar t*ts.” Alyx Vance from the Half-Life games looks like an actual human being and not a blow-up doll (at least as far as your graphics card can carry her from a mere jumble of polygons), and she has a fan base with both sexes.

So now we have the second half of the answer as to why the sexes are far from equal in video games: Writing, developing, and modeling a female character who can be admired for her personality and realistic proportions takes a lot of effort. Much more effort than just sliding the “bounce” bar to maximum and calling it a day.

As for developers who meet girl gamers halfway, like with the aforementioned Mia Fey…well, maybe they can’t help it. I remember a”Peanuts” cartoon wherein Linus was drawing a picture of his sister, Lucy. She was looking over Linus’s shoulder while he drew, and he got so nervous that he drew the portrait with a gigantic, gaping mouth. Of course, Linus got slugged.
So maybe some developers try to draw realistic breasts on their characters, but shaking hands and possessed pens create otherwise.

Just kidding. It’s not that hard to talk to us and learn about what we want to see in a game heroine, developers. You can do it. We believe in you.
